Nutritional Needs of a Student Nurse
In order for student nurses to keep up with their demanding physical, mental, and emotional responsibilities, proper nutrition is essential for sustaining energy, concentration, and overall well-being. Their diet should focus heavily on a balanced diet. Macronutrients, namely Carbohydrates, which are a key source of energy, can be taken from whole grains, fruits, and vegetables, which provide sustained energy for long study hours and clinical shifts. Protein is another macronutrient that can be taken from lean meats, fish, eggs, legumes, and dairy to help muscle repair and maintain immune function. The last macronutrient is Fat, which can be taken from avocados, nuts, seeds, and olive oil to support brain function and hormone balance. As for micronutrients, Iron is one of the most essential minerals as it prevents fatigue and maintains oxygen flow; this can be found in red meat, spinach, and lentils. B vitamins are also important micronutrients because they enhance brain function and reduce stress. They can be found in whole grains, eggs, and leafy greens. Lastly, vitamin C is also extremely important, especially when coming into contact with different patients with different conditions, and with vitamin C, a student nurse's immunity is supported; this can be found in citrus fruits and berries.
